2012 Peter S. Thacher Award Recipient: Robert G. Marvinney, Ph.D.
Robert Marvinney has been with the Maine Geological Survey since 1987, and has been Director of the survey and State Geologist since 1995. He runs a multifaceted agency with programs in geologic mapping, aquifer delineation, groundwater quality, coastal geology, and geologic hazards. All programs use GIS for data management, analysis, and dissemination. Marvinney began working with GIS in 1983 while employed by Exxon in Houston, where he helped develop geological applications of the technology. After arriving in Maine in 1987, he wrote the RFP that acquired the first state-of-the-art GIS for Maine state government and since that time has been involved in all aspects of GIS development in state government.
