GIS for Facilities Management "In-Building GIS" Revolution? Evolution? Or just a good idea? |
|
| GIS is coming inside the building! Some call it a revolution, as did Joe Francica in his April 2, 2008 article in Directions Magazine entitled 3D, BIM and Going Green: Cities are Challenged by a New Geospatial Revolution. Others may view it as the natural evolution of GIS. And still others tasked with maintaining facilities in a fiscally and environmentally sustainable manner may just think its a good idea and the right thing to do. Regardless of what you want to call what is happening, its hard to deny that the changes in geospatial technology that are occurring now are anything but amazing, extraordinary and far reaching in the potential to impact the way we do things. |
| How will this trend affect you? Will it... |
- reduce costs and improve service
- streamline workflows
- manage assets more effectively
- keep track of critical key performance indicators
- help decision makers visualize solutions
The list could go on and on....
|
And what is driving this trend toward more integration and interoperability of disparate technologies? Is it maturation and the increased capability of technology? Is it the web? Or is it just the great need and desire to better visualize and understand the complex world we live in so that we can better manage our limited resources? How much will the new Building Information Modeling (BIM) standard effect this trend? Has GIS finally entered the building? Should GIS really become SIS for Spatial Information Systems?
These are just some of the myriad questions that we hope to explore, expand, dwell on, and maybe even answer as we try to bring together a diverse group of geospatial industry providers (ESRI), their business partners/solution providers, and practitioners for a series of panel discussions, technical workshops and presentations at the 2008 NEARC Conference on Cape Cod September 21-24. Please consider coming to participate in this process and help us "Navigate the Geospatial Approach." |
