| Abstract: | In 2002 the Harwich Water Department (HWD) started to implement their GIS. The department decided to make the process a phased approach to spread the implementation costs out over time. They started with MassGIS level mapping and basic ArcView, with a goal of increasing the amount of information, accuracy of that information and capabilities of the system over time. Now in 2008 the GIS is spatially built on fly-over information and GPS data collection. And the interface for a standard user is web-based via ArcServer with access to various databases, tie-card and mapping information. In addition the department has developed a mobile application that is a .net application with and ArcEngine mapping component. This mobile application does not require internet access except to update the databases. In the end the benefit to this project was to get all the information out of people's heads and off paper maps and make it all easily accessible to everyone that needs it. |
