This presentation describes the evolution of the General Purpose Viewer (GPV), a Web GIS and database-centric system integration tool used by several communities in the northeast. The GPV was built originally for the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts to fulfill their desire for a database configurable Web GIS technology that would provide a consistent, simple interface and common GIS tools. The GPV has evolved into a system that can be deployed as a stand alone application or integrated with data-centric desktop or web-based applications, even integrating with oblique imagery viewers. We describe the unique approach to the design of this system, which has been led by a growing consortium of users with the common need for a 'one size fits most' scalable application that can be deployed without the need for programming knowledge. |
