Abstract: Linear referencing is a technique used to depict geographic locations along a linear feature such as a highway, pipeline, or river. These locations, called events, have been used by the Office of Planning at the Executive Office of Transportation to aid in planning highway maintenance, traffic, and regulations, among many other uses. This presentation will provide a detailed overview of linear referencing, and how it is applied within the context of transportation planning. The concepts of dynamic segmentation will be described to show how event tables can be used to store and manage events along a linear feature without breaking the feature at each event occurrence. Tools will be presented that can help to develop a linear referencing system. Additionally, applications will be displayed in order to support the benefits of applying a linear referencing system to users of linear data and show how linear referenced data is being used.
