Title: GIS On A Blackberry Smart Phone
Authors: Scott Roberts, Town of South Windsor
Date/Time: Monday, September 22 ~ 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Abstract: The Town has purchased the Freeance Mobile software and views the software as an innovative, very cost effective solution for establishing locations of equipment/staff and then plotting the locations of the equipment/staff by time and date on a map. Using the GPS built into BlackBerry 8800 smart phones, Freeance Mobile will automatically collect the locations of the smart phone as it travels. The GPS locations of the smart phone will be sent over the air to a database and stored at the Towns datacenter. The GPS point data is extracted from the database and displayed on the Towns ESRI GIS mapping. The Public Works & IT Department are working to jointly build applications that enable mobile workers to performs many location based tasks such as to map catch basins, track mowing activities, locate street sweeping equipment, record code enforcement violation, monitor the leaf collection program and locate assets related to the Town's sanitary and storm water systems. Currently to Town is moving forward with several mobile application pilots and will report their findings both postive and negative with using gis on a smart phone.
