| Abstract: | With the release of ArcGIS 9.2 SDE is now available for SQLEXPRESS databases. While there are limits on data size and number of users, this can be an effective way for medium size organizations to increase performance for their highest volume users. There are various hurdles to face when taking this approach. Not having the full SQL Server software, limits the database administrator’s ability to create views and update scripts within that environment. Permissions can be difficult to set up. There is also not much literature available yet on ESRI’s web site about working in this environment as the technology is fairly new. Finally, the limitation on number of users accessing the databases means that many users will need to remain using legacy applications. However, once these hurdles have been overcome this approach should help our power GIS users run applications in a more timely fashion. |
