The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport is the Navy's comprehensive
research, development, test and evaluation laboratory (RDT&E) for engineering
and fleet support of submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and offensive
and defensive weapons systems associated with undersea warfare. The Environmental
Division of NUWC ensures that the Division maintains a high level of environmental
compliance in all its RDT&E activities. Adherence to all applicable laws
and regulations is of utmost importance in accomplishing this goal. Applicable
requirements include the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Executive
Order 12114, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Coastal Zone
Management Act (CZMA), and other federal and state natural resource regulations.
Much of the Navy's environmental planning work is facilitated through the use
of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Mapping in a GIS environment enables
planners to incorporate a multitude of geospatial data pertinent to Navy projects
with environmental, biological, and oceanographic data to visually aid in the
compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
