Developing an Effective Water Infrastructure Database from Scratch for Arc/Info

This presentation will focus on the implementation of a GIS infrastructure by a local government agency. It will describe the methodologies used to convert source materials into digital format, and it will mention some of the special problems encountered when hardcopy materials must be converted into accurate geospatial data.

The City of Worcester had hardcopy maps, service cards, valve cards and other analog information for the City’s water network. Some of this information dated back to 1800s and the City needed a better understanding of the number and types of features that it manages, including water mains, valves, and appurtenances. The City also wanted to create customized applications for maintaining valve, service, and hydrant information in digital format.

Serving as a GIS/Computer consultant to the City of Worcester, EI Technologies, LLC helped the City in the development of its digital water infrastructure database, including the integration of raster data into the GIS. Our services included the development of customized applications that allow City staff to manage the water infrastructure databases in a geo-relational database environment in ESRI’s Arc/Info.
