Developing a Transportation Atlas Tool with ArcMap and ArcObjects

TACT (Transportation Atlas Creation Tool) is map atlas extension for ArcMap. The application was developed using ArcObjects for Maine Department of Transportation’s Maintenance and Traffic Engineering Sections. TACT produces a set of tiled maps of transportation data at three different scales using a nested indexing scheme. Through a simple interface, users can choose to print maps covering the entire state, maps covering a particular county or town, or just a single map page. Each map can be printed in two flavors; one showing traffic related transportation data, the other showing data related to road maintenance.

TACT takes advantage of many of the new and updated features available in ArcMap including map templates, rule-based labeling, embedded SQL queries and enhanced symbology. This talk will describe how these features reduced programming time and added flexibility to the application. It will also describe some of the limitations of ArcMap and other issues that were discovered during the development of TACT.
