Central Vermont's Natural Resources CD: Developing an ArcExplorer Product for Local Use

In 1999, the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission, along with the other 11 RPCs in Vermont was asked to complete a Natural Resources Inventory as part of a legislative mandate. For phase one, all 12 RPCs produced a report and a series of two maps showing 10-11 different "natural resources" including deer wintering yards, prime/statewide agricultural soils, and steep slopes, among others.

In phase two, most of the other RPCs focused on improving their local natural resources data development. In Central Vermont, we decided to create a CD product that local officials and residents could use to better visualize these natural resources. Using Arc Explorer, we created three projects that showcase the 11 natural resources on the paper maps.

Along with the Arc Explorer projects, CVRPC developed a series of web pages to help local users install Arc Explorer, view the Natural Resources report, view the metadata of the layers, view images of the static maps and learn a little more about GIS.

In this presentation, I will discuss our process in developing the CD from building the ArcExplorer projects to final production details, and user feedback.
