Teaching ArcIMS new map languages

The ArcIMS map description language, ArcXML or AXL, is a powerful and versatile means of defining a map to be served over the Web. It may not, however, be the most appropriate language for a particular mapping service or application. Fortunately, AXL as an XML schema is easily converted to and from other XML dialects. This paper will cover the development of alternative schemas for user-friendly map composition and interoperability with open GIS mapserver standards. Methods for storing and serving such map descriptions as well as their transformation to/from AXL will then be discussed.
