NEARC 2001

A Tapestry of Time and Space: Using ArcIMS™ and Maplicity™ to explore the San Francisco Bay Area, past and present.

Todd F. Helt and Andrew S. Waxman, Telemorphic, Inc. (Oakland, CA)

In this project, ESRI’s ArcIMS™ and Telemorphic’s Maplicity™ technology are implemented to provide a fully interactive mapping experience for on-line visitors to the USGS Bay Area Regional Database (BARD) website. Numerous public domain datasets available from USGS such as DOQ’s, DRG’s, and satellite imagery, along with selected vector data such as TIGER 2000 streets information, were compiled and deployed on the web using ArcIMS™, and Telemorphic’s custom Java-applet client Maplicity™ to enable state-of-the art imagery manipulation over the internet. In addition, selected works of cartographic art from the David Rumsey Collection depicting San Francisco from the mid-1800’s through the early 1900’s were also incorporated into the database. This richness of data content, along with the robust display and analysis capabilities of the ArcIMS™ and Maplicity™ technologies, allow user’s to easily compare and contrast data from past and present, as well as create and save custom data merge products. The presentation includes an interactive on-line demonstration.
