Name: Steven Anderson Transitions in Web-based GIS Deployment Abstract: New developments in hardware and software technology as well as evolving business practices in government agencies are changing the approach that government agencies are taking towards implementing web-based GIS solutions. This presentation will focus on describing the developments that have been observed, detailing the transitions that have been taking place both in technology and government practices, and explaining how they are effecting implementations in these agencies. Many agencies implemented first generation systems that lacked focus on varying end-user designs and they are now being replaced with second generation systems that are focusing on the true end-users. Differences in approach designed for “GIS savvy” users versus the general population will also be discussed. Transitions in system design, implementation and deployment will be presented and explained. Examples from agencies around the northeast will be used to further explore concepts presented and support the recommendations that are made. |
