NEARC 2001

GIS in the K-12 Classroom

Several teachers from Massachusetts will discuss how they use GIS in their classrooms.  The GIS projects presented will include Make Way for Ducklings (grade 1), redistricting (grade 8), land preservation and wetlands management (grade 10), crime analysis (grades 11 and 12) and controlling the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (grades 11 and 12).  A curriculum developed by Shirley Griffin (Oakmont Regional High School) using ArcView to explore watershed management will be presented.  Laraine Hawkins will outline the steps she took in getting the Franklin High School GIS program up and running, and Dorian Des Lauriers (Des Lauriers Municipal Solution, Inc.) will discuss the effects businesses can have on partnering with GIS education.
