Abstract: Within the realm of IT and GIS , one of the most misunderstood technologies is software Portals. The use of Portal technologies has proven to be an effective mechanism for hosting a wide variety of enterprise information. Although many GIS professionals recognize that portals could play a key role in GIS integration, few organizations ever realize a fraction of the full potential of their portal implementations. For example, most portal products contain workflow and collaboration tools that can be leveraged within a GIS editing environment to enforce business rules and exchange of information between different departments. By using industry standard software products significant cost savings are obtained compared to custom-built solutions.

This presentation will focus on the integration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and ESRI technologies by the City of Boston. The City is using SharePoint and ArcGIS Server in deeply integrated core permitting, assessing, and other GIS maintenance practices. This presentation will cover specific strategies and opportunities for integrating ArcGIS with MOSS. The following is a summary of the topics that will be covered:
  • Overview of portals – benefits and risks
  • Using portal workflow engines to drive GIS processes
  • Mapping Webpart implementation
  • Microsoft BizTalk messaging integration with SharePoint and ArcGIS
  • Demonstration of specific tools and approaches taken by the City of Boston with ArcGIS
  • MOSS collaboration tools and GIS
  • Programming and extending the SharePoint environment
