Title: Geospatial Information and the Campus Environment
Authors: Michael Parkin, MIT Department of Facilities
Date/Time: Monday, October 5 ~ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Abstract: MIT’s approach to their space management has created a spatial data infrastructure based on the interior building spaces for its campus. As the system matured, it has worked its way from the inside out and now integrates space, building, and land information. MIT manages and analyzes this information together in a common framework and is now exploring the importance of geospatial relationships of interior and exterior features. By leveraging the power of GIS, MIT now visualizes, analyzes, and shares information about its campus in new and exciting ways.

This presentation will illustrate the process of how MIT took its GIS inside of its buildings and will discuss the challenges faced with integrating information from today’s design environments. Topics will include analyses for space/facilities management and will show how this information is accessed through web and desktop clients. The presentation will also showcase a number of different 3D GIS applications to visualize their data.
