Abstract: North Attleborough Electric Dept (NAED), a municipal electric utility in Massachusetts, has been working on a project to update their GIS database. This database was created in 2002 and was maintained by NAED staff using an Origins Electric Utility extension which worked in parallel with ArcGIS. Since mid-2005, all GIS maintenance work ceased with the departure of several key staff. In 2008, new managers at NAED implemented a Field Survey Project using ArcGIS Server and ArcPad to help update the GIS database in addition to capturing information about conditions for several electric assets. This project was designed to create a GIS database that would support business applications such as asset management, outage management, SCADA, etc. This presentation will discuss the project planning, results, lessons learned, and next-steps for improving and maintaining the GIS database.
