Creation of 3D GIS environments continues be an evolving process, often requiring the integration of components from different software environments to obtain desired results. With multipatch features becoming more important, users need to know how to coordinate their 3D data development. This paper seeks to help GIS users assimilate opportunities created by the release or pending release of new GIS software functionality. In particular, the author will concentrate on new capabilities in ArcGIS 9.4 and how to integrate 3D features into a revamped ArcScene environment. Input from programs like SketchUp and other 3D feature building software will be outlined and demonstrated. With 3D editing and analysis capabilities soon to join the improving visualization environments, the future of 3D GIS looks very bright. In addition to community planning applications, 3D is playing an important role in the developing Building Information Modeling (BIM) process, aspects of emergency management and environmental simulation. |
