Abstract: BETA Group, Inc. was retained by the City of Taunton to oversee the implementation of a project to perform scanning/archiving and Geographic Information System (GIS) support services. The City had a need to scan sewer record plans and service connection cards to a file format that can be viewed independently or via GIS software. BETA Group's work, along with the efforts of a vendor specializing in scanning and archiving, enhances the ability of the City to view sewer and water infrastructure on the desktop or in the field via a laptop.

Topics and areas of interest include:
  • Database design
  • File naming conventions
  • Coordination with interested parties
  • How long does it take to scan 1,200 record plans?
  • Deciding whether to scan the sewer record plans on or off-site
  • Overview of the process of hyperlinking scanned sewer record plan and service card files to GIS
  • Will the scanner fit in the elevator? Logistics of equipment movement
  • Did we scan all the plans that needed to be scanned?
  • Additional benefits
  • Lessons learned and things to consider
