Abstract: From 1951to 1999, a series of teams at UMASS Amherst delineated land use polygons for Massachusetts, using the USGS quads as a base and maintaining a consistent set of classes, although with somewhat of a shift in emphasis from forestry to planning, In 2005, the state acquired 4-band digital orthophotography and solicited proposals for a larger scale, semi-automated revision of the land use map, retaining the previous classification. We will present that product, which was developed at considerably less cost and with greater detail than previous versions, but which presented a set of challenges all its own.
