| Abstract: | Service Learning is a pedagogic strategy that integrates community service with traditional instruction to create a community centered learning experience. Worcester State College has implemented a "Colleges and the Community" initiative to use GIS and field mapping to facilitate service learning. Students will use geospatial tools such as Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning System receivers in projects that benefit the community in addition to providing students with practical experience and skills. The initial project involved working with the Greater Worcester Land Trust and the Worcester Regional Vocational and Technical High School in creating trail maps for Open Space in the City of Worcester. These efforts will be part of the Environmental Technology curriculum at the High School as well as a Community mapping class at Worcester State. |
