In March of 2006, the UNH Geospatial Technologies Training Center began to offer a workshop called 'Pictures, Points and Places' with the goal of teaching geospatial novices to use low-cost GPS units and digital cameras to make interactive GIS maps. The workshop proved very popular with GIS beginners and GIS-savy participants alike due to the wide appeal of linking digital images with locations. The workshop has since been offered in a variety of states (Maine, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) and has improved tremendously as a result of these collaborative efforts. The University of Connecticut Geospatial Technology Program is pushing the technology further still and has developed a VB program that calculates where pictures were taken along a GPS track. The program produces points linked to photos that can be used in a GIS and Google Earth. This session will cover the collaborative process through which 'Pictures, Points and Places' was developed, the content of the course, the typical attendees, applications of the methodology and a demonstration of the tools used to link the GPS points and images. |
