Abstract: Web mapping services provide a new and expanding means for local governments throughout New England to contribute towards development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) as administered by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). An important element in building the NSDI is the Geospatial One Stop (GOS) which serves as a portal to both local government datasets and public-facing web mapping services.

Easy-to-use tools are now available at the GOS web site (www.geodata.gov) which enables local governments to quickly register as a GOS "user" as well as to access forms to create metadata records. The increased availability of local datasets and web mapping services contributes significantly to supporting critical government programs in the areas of public safety, emergency management, natural resources and environmental planning, transportation, public works, and economic development.

This paper will provide a step-by-step overview of how local governments within the NEARC community - with particular focus on ones which currently support public facing ArcIMS web mapping services - can become actively engaged in contributing towards the NSDI through the GOS portal.
