Evaluating future growth potential, in terms of new additional residential dwelling units and non-residential space, is vital to effective community planning. In the past, this sort of analysis was typically performed using spreadsheets or custom-designed applications. Increasingly, GIS technology is being utilized not only to map results but also to perform analyses. One easy-to-use GIS tool for growth capacity ( buildout ) analysis is the Scenario360 extension to ArcGIS. The Scenario360 "Buildout" tool consists of a semi-automated application that utilizes wizard-based setup screens. Aside from generating growth capacity calculations with GIS outputs, other Scenario360 tools can be used to create multiple growth scenarios and to create a variety of custom measures that can enable communities to more-effectively leverage growth capacity analyses for improved planning outcomes. Workshop attendees that bring their laptops (software must be purchased and installed beforehand - www.communityviz.org) can work through a sample analysis on their computers during this workshop. The workshop will also be projected onto a large screen so that others can also follow along. |
