Abstract: Everyone knows that GIS can provide more and better information for decision making and planning process. However, can GIS help create a more democratic and participatory planning and decision making process? This presentation explores how the Town of Amherst, MA utilized web based GIS tools to enhance the participation of the public in the Town's Master Planning process. From the simple display of many different types of maps in a map gallery, to the integration and display of the ideas generated from public participation to the interactive mark up tools available on Amherst's Web GIS, see how these tools have helped inform a Master Plan process that involved many hundreds of Amherst citizens.
