Abstract: There exist among us those whose focus is not so much on using GIS as it is on helping others use and learn about GIS. The general public, GIS professionals, other professionals, and managers all need help accessing the power of GIS, though in different ways. Awareness-raising, training, professional development, and networking support are some of the activities that GIS Outreach specialists engage in.

This panel will discuss how current trends affect their efforts, which reflect how those trends affect the whole GIS community. Questions that may be addressed include:
  • Has Google Earth raised the general public's map/data availability expectations? What should we do about it?
  • What are people doing with GIS these days and what are the differences between expertise levels?
  • What challenges do we face in trying to meet everyone's needs, and how are we dealing with them?
