GIS usage is growing on college campuses and across disciplines. Supporting GIS campus-wide is a challenge particularly at smaller schools that have more limited resources. This paper will present successful GIS support models that have worked at liberal arts colleges. The study surveyed 93 liberal arts schools and conducted in depth case studies of four exemplar schools. In determining support models, we examined:
- Usage/Support (the number of departments and faculty using GIS, the number of courses and independent studies using GIS, where they go for assistance)
- Infrastructure (hardware, software, technical support, space)
- Data Management/Project Archiving (finding, storing, archiving, and making data sets and past projects available)
- Organizational Structure (which department(s) support GIS and in which aspects)
Our presentation will present our findings and analysis of the similarities and differences between the four different support models, and demonstrate the themes that have emerged from the effective models. |
