| Title: | Potential Development in the Upper Hudson Watershed |
| Authors: | Hannah Phillips, Robert Jones |
| Poster: | Saratoga Springs' current water source will not provide the city with enough water if the city's population grows as predicted. Saratoga Springs, New York must therefore seek a supplemental drinking water source. Two options present themselves: Saratoga Lake and the Upper Hudson. Following a previous build-out analysis of Saratoga Lake, we will predict development in key villages along the Upper Hudson to highlight areas that are impending threats to water quality. We will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify the watershed, and analyze the effect of human determined factors on development, including current zoning ordinances, predicted changes in zoning, comprehensive plans for development, current land use, and the Adirondack Park Agency land use classifications. We will analyze natural factors as indicators of development prone lands, including geology, hydrology, and slope. Comparing our build-out analysis with the Saratoga Lake analysis will help to determine the pro's and con's of each potential water source's ability to effectively providing a clean, sustainable supply of water to people who rely on Saratoga Springs' water supply. |
