Abstract: This workshop is designed to help people new to 3D get started, inspire those with limited experience the continue their work and to show experienced users how to get the most out of their efforts. The presentation will look at ways to use the ESRI multipatch format to create compelling displays in the ArcScene and ArcGlobe environments. The workshop will make use of a formal presentation, interspersed with live demonstrations to confirm that concepts are understood. Topics to be covered include:
  1. Scene Planning and Design
  2. The multipatch, and why it is important to ArcGIS users
  3. Differences between 3D graphics, symbols and features
  4. Modeling techniques to create efficient building models and other landscape features
  5. Texture capture, creation and use
  6. Working with good measurements
  7. Other sources of 3D models
  8. Positioning 3D features on the landscape
  9. Converting your data for use in Google Earth
This workshop will make extensive use of both the free Google SketchUp and the commercial SketchUp Pro to create various 3D features, symbols and graphic elements for use in ArcScene and ArcGlobe, as well as Google Earth.
