| Abstract: | This presentation builds on the wildly successful NEARC 2006 panel discussion - "Mind over Metadata." (Hey, when it comes to metadata you gotta cut us some slack.) This year, the panel will focus on identifying what information is essential for a "minimal" metadata record to be practical and functional. While some producers of geospatial data prepare complete metadata that comply with the FGDC's Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), many organizations either skip the process altogether or prepare inconsistent documentation that contain various subsets of metadata elements. The purpose of this panel discussion is to explore the CSDGM and to identify those elements that together constitute a minimal, but adequate, metadata record. Our goal is to make metadata preparation easier and thereby encourage more organizations to produce at least minimal metadata to describe their data holdings. |
