| Abstract: | The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) have collaborated to customize an ArcPad field collection tool for recreational trail attribution. Both DEC and OPRHP collect and manage trails under their respective jurisdictions, and data sharing will benefit both agencies. OPRHP is currently in the process of comprehensively inventorying the trail systems of the 170 + New York State Parks. The custom ArcPad tool allows OPRHP to collect trail attributes easily and in a manner that is consistent with existing DEC data. As NYS agencies increasingly share and distribute GIS information, similar alignments in data collection will be important. The collaboration also served as an opportunity to improve OPRHP expertise in customizing ArcPad forms for use in the field. DEC provided instruction in the use of ArcPad Application Builder and visual basic scripting for the creation of the customized data collection tool. This instruction was later developed into a two-day ArcPad/Application Builder course which will be made available to other programs and State Agencies. |
