| Abstract: | The objectives of this project were to locate, catalog, and collect as much GIS data as possible to support EBM for the State of New York; identify gaps in the data; and to propose strategies for accessing and using the data for analysis and mapping. A very large net was cast in seeking this data. The results of this project's initial data gathering efforts provide the beginning of an evolving repository of digital data. We anticipate that it will gradually expand to include a more focused collection that includes those specific databases needed to help serve the goals articulated by all levels of geographic hierarchy involved in developing ecosystem-based management for New York's Ocean and Great Lakes watersheds. There are some significant data gaps in essential data for ecosystem-based management. These include: wetlands, tidal information, benthic information, and underwater infrastructure. The cost of improving, extending or creating these datasets will be quite large. They should only be developed in an organized way and in collaboration with multiple stakeholders. Continued effort can provide the opportunity for expanding the use of the data in both mapping and analytical tasks. This paper describes the project and provides ideas for an evolutionary system for access, web-based mapping/visualization, scientific/planning analyses, and performance measurement. |
