NEARC 2005 Keynote Speakers
Monday, September 19, 2005
Joe Kelley, University of Maine - Joe Kelley is a native of Portland, ME. He received a BA in Geology from Boston University in 1973; and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from Lehigh University in 1976 and 1980, respectively. He taught at the University of New Orleans for three years and then returned to Maine in 1982 as the State Marine Geologist with the Maine Geological Survey. He worked on beach erosion and development issues for the state for 16 years before becoming a Professor of Marine Geology at the University of Maine in 1998. There he teaches graduate classes in Coastal Zone Management and in Marine Geology. He still conducts research on sea floor mapping and coastal development in Maine, but just returned from a 6 month sabbatical in Northern Ireland.

Jeff Jackson, ESRI, Inc. - Jeff Jackson earned a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Surveying Engineering from the University of Maine in 1988 and 1990. His graduate research focused on improving user interaction for Geographic Information Systems. In 1990 he joined ESRI and helped envision and develop ArcView, ESRI’s first geographical user interface-oriented GIS application. Jeff became the lead developer for a number of subsequent progects including ArcView 2, MapObjects, ArcInfo 8, and various ArcGIS releases. Jeff’s currently leading a project to reinvigorate the ArcGIS desktop applications, improving quality, usability, and performance.
Andy MacDonald, ESRI, Inc. - Andy MacDonald studied B.Sc. Geology from 1990-1995 in Ottawa, Canada. He subsequently worked for the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), where he gained an appreciation for the importance of GIS in the field of geology. In 1996, he enrolled in a graduate GIS program at the College of Geographic Sciences in Nova Scotia, Canada. In 1996, Andy joined ESRI Redlands and has worked on a number of software products, including ArcSDE, ArcView, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server. Andy has been the primary author on “Builidng a Geodatabase” and the “ArcGIS Server Administrator and Developer Guide.” With extensive knowledge in Object Oriented Database and Application design, his specialist areas are GIS data management and GIS application development.
