20th Annual Northeast Arc Users Group Conference

The Northeast Arc Users Group invites you to attend its 20th Annual Conference, September 18 - 21, 2005 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland, Maine This year’s conference will be held in the Victorian seaport city of Portland, Maine. Our host hotel, the Holiday Inn by the Bay, is walking distance from the Old Port, working waterfront and Arts District, and is the perfect starting point for the visual and culinary delights of Portland. Immerse yourself in historic architecture, speciality shopping, and fun casual watering holes. The conference will feature keynote sessions, vendor demonstrations, poster displays and contest, technical workshops, and user presentations. The conference is expected to attract over 500 users of ESRI’s ArcInfo and ArcView GIS software, including urban and regional planners, educators, natural resource and utility professionals, and federal, state, and local government agencies that use geospatial information for problem solving, analysis, and decision making.

ESRI Technical Workshops
ESRI will offer intensive technical workshops during the concurrent workshop times. These include:

• Creating and Using ArcGIS Topology • ArcGIS Interoperability
• The ArcGIS Geoprocessing Framework • Introduction to ArcIMS and ArcWeb Services

• Developing ArcGIS Server Applications • Raster Data Management in ArcGis
• Mapping and Cartography in ArcGIS • Introduction to ArcSDE
• ArcSDE Tuning and Configuration
 
Near the exhibit area, ESRI will feature the Doctor’s Office where you can ask ESRI’s technical staff questions specific to your situation, and a Test Drive area for you to demo new or updated software.

Vendor Area
The Casco Bay Exhibit Hall will provide the location for the Vendors and Posters and will open at 11:30am on Monday, and continue through Tuesday at 1:30pm. This is a great venue for you to promote your product or service to the GIS community. We have received many calls regarding exhibit space, and have sold out in past years, so we encourage you to register early to secure one of the 45 available booths. Peter S. Thacher Award
Annual nominations are sought for the Peter S. Thacher Award. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated commitment and excellence in using Geographic Information System Technology to achieve success in natural resource management and conservation at the local level.

Social Events
Sunday Activities ~
NEARC Golf Tournament (11:00 am - 4:00 pm): This scramble format tournament includes players of all abilities. Dave Pollock will showcase one of the best public courses in coastal Maine. Email Dave at dpollock@woodardcurran.com for more information.
Birdwatching (1:00 - 4:00 pm): September is a great time to see migrating songbirds in Southern Maine. We will meet at the Holiday Inn at 1pm and carpool to a few local spots to see what we can find. This time of year is especially good for seeing sparrow flocks late in the day, and southbound warblers. Please contact Michael Smith (michael.smith@maine.gov) to sign up. Cost: Free.
Seakayaking (1:00 - 4:00 pm): Join Matthew Brampton and Sean Myers for an afternoon of paddling along the shoreline of mid-Maine. Email Sean at myerssd@cdm.com for more information.
Harbor Cruise (6:00 - 8:00 pm): Join us for a two hour cruise around Portland Harbor aboard the Bay Mist, a comfortable cruise liner. A cash bar and light hors d’eouvres will be provided. Dinner will be on your own in downtown Portland after the cruise. The ferry dock is a short walk from the hotel, or you can park at the docks. Directions will be provided at registration. The fee is $35.00 per person.
Monday Evening ~
Vendor Reception and Poster Social (4:00 - 6:00 pm): Have a beverage and chat with the vendors that support the conference. Light hors d’eouvres will be served (not dinner!). In addition to visiting vendors, view the poster displays and vote for the best map at the conference.
Monday Night at Bull Feeneys (8:00 pm - Midnight): This annual Monday night event has become a tradition. Bull Feeneys is one of Portland’s most popular pubs featuring local entertainment and dancing, pool tables, and Monday Night Football.
Tuesday Evening ~
MEGUG Business Meeting: 5 - 6 p.m.
Awards Banquet and 20th Anniversary Celebration: Celebrate the winner of the Peter Thacher Award, the annual award given to a NEARC member whose work in the GIS field is exemplary and wish NEARC a happy 20th Anniversary.
Pub Crawl: We’ll select from the best of Portland’s watering holes as we take a fun, progressive stroll through town. Maps will be available at the registration desk on Tuesday.

Keynote Speakers
Joe Kelley, University of Maine Joe Kelley is a native of Portland, ME. He received a BA in Geology from Boston University in 1973; and Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from Lehigh University in 1976 and 1980, respectively. He taught at the University of New Orleans for three years and then returned to Maine in 1982 as the State Marine Geologist with the Maine Geological Survey. He worked on beach erosion and development issues for the state for 16 years before becoming a Professor of Marine Geology at the University of Maine in 1998. There he teaches graduate classes in Coastal Zone Management and in Marine Geology. He still conducts research on sea floor mapping and coastal development in Maine, but just returned from a 6 month sabbatical in Northern Ireland.

Jeff Jackson, ESRI, Inc. Jeff Jackson earned a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Surveying Engineering from the University of Maine in 1988 and 1990. His graduate research focused on improving user interaction for Geographic Information Systems. In 1990 he joined ESRI and helped envision and develop ArcView, ESRI’s first geographical user interface-oriented GIS application. Jeff became the lead developer for a number of subsequent projects including ArcView 2, MapObjects, ArcInfo 8, and various ArcGIS releases. Jeff’s currently leading a project to reinvigorate the ArcGIS desktop applications, improving quality, usability, and performance.

Andy MacDonald, ESRI, Inc. Andy MacDonald studied B.Sc. Geology from 1990-1995 in Ottawa, Canada. He subsequently worked for the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), where he gained an appreciation for the importance of GIS in the field of geology. In 1996, he enrolled in a graduate GIS program at the College of Geographic Sciences in Nova Scotia, Canada. In 1996, Andy joined ESRI Redlands and has worked on a number of software products, including ArcSDE, ArcView, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server. Andy has been the primary author on “Builidng a Geodatabase” and the “ArcGIS Server Administrator and Developer Guide.” With extensive knowledge in Object Oriented Database and Application design, his specialist areas are GIS data management and GIS application development.
