Abstract: The first small area (census block group and census tract level) demographic data from the Census Bureau since Census 2000 will become available in late 2010 from the 2009 American Community Survey (ACS) program 5-year estimates. In early 2011, the first data will become available from Census 2010 at the census block and higher geographic levels. Also in early 2011, the Census 2010 Census Bureau TIGER shapefiles will become available. These TIGER shapefiles will be the first vintage to show Census 2010 geography and reflect qualitative improvements from the Census 2010 LUCA program.

Paralleling and a part of these developments, first detailed demographic data since Census 2000 for all U.S. school districts will become available in late 2010 from the 2009 ACS program 5-year estimates. In early 2011, the Census 2010 Census Bureau TIGER shapefiles will become available providing access to 2009-10 vintage school district boundaries. Starting in early 2011, Census 2010 demographic data (complete count data only) will become available for 2009-10 vintage school district boundaries. In mid-2011, 2009 ACS school district special tabulation data will become available providing unique insights into children's demographics and living characteristics by enrollment universe for all school districts.

This workshop session will review the structure and content of these data resources and how to effectively integrate and use these data in geographic information system (GIS) applications. Participants will view use of online resources presently available to access and use these data in a GIS procedural and how-to context. These tools will include use of the Census Bureau FactFinder, related Census Bureau TIGER access facilities, Department of Education School District Demographic System among other tools. Learn about integrating detailed subject matter with TIGER geographic resources for GIS thematic mapping and geospatial analysis. Learn how Census TIGER shapefiles can be used with a mapcompiler to quickly and easily generate custom and very detailed GIS solutions. Learn about integrating other data with these geographic and demographic data.
