GIS in Education Pre-Conference Event
8:30 am – 5:00 pm
For educators who use GIS in K-12 and Higher Education. There will be hands-on training from nationally recognized trainers, opportunities to learn about new resources, examples of successful projects around the region, chances to network with other educators and instructional technologists about their GIS programs, and much more.


Pre-Conference Seminar: ArcGIS Online Community Maps
1:00 - 5:00 pm
This seminar will introduce users to Esri's Community Maps Program and describe how ArcGIS users can participate today. The Community Maps Program is intended to enhance the quality of the online community basemaps that Esri hosts and makes freely available to ArcGIS users. The ArcGIS Online Community basemap is built from best available sources of local authoritative data that is provided by local, state, or national organizations in the ArcGIS user community. Join us at this seminar to learn more about the tools, techniques, and workflows Esri and ArcGIS customers are currently deploying. You will learn about preparing the data for the basemap, authoring the basemap, and creating the cache to be published online as well as learn how you can contribute to this exciting program.


Tasting Reception at Coastal Extreme Brewing Company
5:30 – 7:30 pm
Get a back of the house tour of one of New England's premier brewers (and Rhode Island's ONLY microbrewery!). Learn about the brewing process and a bit about Rhode Island's only active distillery. The fee includes generous Newport Storm beer samplings, souvenir pint glass, and light hors d'oeuvres. $35.00 per person, space is limited!

Vendor Reception and Poster Social
4:00 – 6:00 pm
Have a beverage and chat with the vendors that support the conference. Posters will be on display and we encourage attendees to vote for their favorite entry. Poster abstracts will be accepted on-line at until October 1, 2010.

Enjoy Newport's excellent variety of restaurants while dining on your own. Afterwards, join all of your NEARC friends at One Pelham East and jam to the funky sound of Chiva Bus!

Cocktail Reception, Coastal Cabaret, and NEARC Award Banquet
5:45 – 8:30 pm

It's a Shore Thing: A Coastal Cabaret, is an acclaimed musical created by Rhode Island's Judith Swift and Charles Cofone. The performance focuses on coastal ecosystems with songs that address contemporary issues such as nonpoint source pollution, invasive species, watershed management, eutrophication, and human impacts on natural systems, all put to the beat of calypso, jazz, rap, and bling. This is a musical treat for environmentalists, and hipsters alike!

DeepWater Horizon: The Largest Blowout Oil Spill in U.S. History

Dr. Malcolm L. Spaulding is Professor of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Narragansett, RI. Dr. Spaulding is an internationally recognized expert in marine environmental modeling with a primary focus in the areas oil spill transport and fate, pollutant transport and fate, hydrodynamics and the development of integrated model and data information systems. He has led the development of several of the most widely used oil spill transport and fate, hydrodynamic, and water quality models and integrated data and information management systems. He is widely published in the field of marine environmental and oil spill modeling.
